Volvo promises the new XC90 to be the best one yet after giving it a mid-cycle refresh

Singapore – After receiving a facelift and several refinements, Volvo’s latest iteration of its renowned flagship XC90 SUV has been launched in Singapore. Incorporating a plethora of technology and design updates on the interior and exterior alike, the Swedish marque’s award-winning hybrid SUV promises to be better in every way by blending performance, safety and comfort.

The XC90’s remodelled exterior makes it the latest model to incorporate Volvo’s new EV design language. The updated styling integrates subtle yet distinctive changes, including a refined grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers and new wheel designs, making it look both futuristic and imposing.

Also new are Matrix-design LED headlights that can seamlessly adapt their light pattern depending on the road conditions to provide sufficient illumination of the road ahead while not blinding other road users. Integrated cornering lights illuminate the driver’s surroundings at low speeds, making manoeuvring in low-light conditions a breeze. Volvo’s also added a nice touch: dynamic welcome and farewell light sequences to make every journey more pleasurable.

Customers can opt for the efficient and responsive B5 mild-hybrid variant powered by a 2-litre petrol engine, coupled with a 48-volt integrated starter-generator. This allows for 250 horsepower and 0-100 km/h in a sprightly 7.7 seconds. However, for those still craving some extra performance, the T8 plug-in hybrid variant produces an ample 455 horsepower that gives it a rapid century sprint of only 5.4 seconds. This speed hasn’t come at the expense of efficiency either: it offers up to 64km on electric-only mode and a total combined petrol-electric range of over 800km.

On the inside, the central touchscreen now has improved resolution and has been increased to 11.2 inches. Storing a wide range of functions, the screen can add even more functions to its array through future over-the-air software updates.

Volvo designers have also taken owners’ feedback into account and increased storage space in the centre console by adding an extra cupholder. The wireless phone charger behind the central tunnel has also been separated from the main storage area to reduce clutter and enhance convenience. Improved ambient lighting can encapsulate the cabin too for a more luxurious driving experience.

An enriching audio experience is also guaranteed. Standard on the plug-in hybrid variant is an advanced Bowers and Wilkins High Fidelity audio system, made of 19 speakers powered by an impressive 1460-watt amplifier. This is included as an option for the mild-hybrid variant that instead has a Harman Kardon audio system as standard, which features 14 speakers and a 660-watt amplifier.

Moreover, undesirable sounds such as engine, road and wind noise are eliminated through improved sound insulation. Laminated glass has been included as standard on the side windows, as well as sound-absorbent firewall material in the front and acoustic foam on the A and B pillars, ensuring a calm and peaceful driving experience.

Furthermore, Volvo has ensured that driver and passenger comfort are a priority for the XC90. Suspension has been improved through dampers with Frequency Selective Damping technology, allowing the car to adapt its characteristics depending on road conditions and thus ensure a stable and comfortable ride anytime and anywhere.

As if that wasn’t enough to win you over, electronically controlled air suspension can work together with the chassis and consistently monitor the car, road, and driver inputs 500 times a second to ensure a smooth driving experience. This air suspension also gives the car the ability to automatically lower itself by 20mm to make it easier to get in and out of the car or improve aerodynamics. Alternatively, the car can be raised by 40mm to provide better clearance for uneven surfaces, such as off-road terrain.

This air suspension feature is equipped as standard on the plug-in hybrid variant and as an optional extra on the mild-hybrid.

A variety of driver-assistance features also ensures that Volvo upkeeps its spotless reputation as a pioneer in safety. Volvo’s radar and front camera can sense if a driver has drifted out of their lane and steer them back to safety, minimising the danger of a collision or running off the road. Collisions with other road users can also be prevented through auto-braking and steering technology. Additionally, the XC90’s advanced safety cage maximises the protection of those both inside and outside the car.

Lastly, the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants offer an adequate 302 and 262 litres of boot space, respectively. However, this can increase to a whopping 1194 and 1148 litres respectively, perfect for hauling large goods from place to place.

“The XC90 continues to set the benchmark for premium SUVs in Singapore, and with the new Volvo XC90, we are offering customers exceptional efficiency, luxury, and comfort in one complete package,” says Corinne Chua, Managing Director for Volvo at Wearnes. “As we move towards greater electrification, the Volvo XC90, available in both mild and plug-in hybrid variants, perfectly complements our vision by delivering practicality and sustainability that today’s discerning customers appreciate.”

Prices of the two variants haven’t been revealed yet. However, with both the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants now available here, you can visit the Volvo showroom at 249 Alexandra Road for a closer look, or book a test drive on their website at www.volvocars.com/sg.
