As Singapore’s very first locally-made EV, the IONIQ 5 will be a useful learning tool for students and faculty by allowing for applied research and coursework in EV technology and related fields.

Singapore – The Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) has donated a Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric vehicle (EV) to the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 22 February 2025. This decision was carried out to support education, training, and research in electric mobility, smart manufacturing, and energy storage technologies.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is Hyundai’s first model built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This multiple award-winning platform has earned Car of the Year titles in Singapore and India, as well as the German iF Design Award and the Best Electric Car to Buy title from The Car Connection in the USA.

As Singapore’s very first locally-made EV, the IONIQ 5 will be a useful learning tool for students and faculty by allowing for applied research and coursework in EV technology and related fields. The IONIQ 5 will be a part of SIT’s academic programmes and research projects, including undergraduate courses and Continuing Education and Training (CET). Thus, students can gain firsthand experience in fields such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies, advanced diagnostics, energy storage systems, power electronics, advanced diagnostics and EV charging infrastructure development.

“HMGICS’ gift of the IONIQ 5 will strengthen applied learning and research in sustainable mobility at SIT. This state-of-the-art EV enables more authentic learning for our students and provides a very good platform for our faculty to further innovate on sustainable mobility solutions. Together with HMGICS, we are committed to driving innovation and fostering a greener, more connected future in mobility,” said Professor Chua Kee Chaing, President of SIT.

Through this partnership, SIT students and faculty will gain industry opportunities at HMGICS. The collaboration will also foster the co-sharing of technical knowledge and the development of new and contemporary CET courses for HMGICS staff.

“At HMGICS, we believe the future of mobility is shaped not only by technology but also by the people who drive progress forward,” said Dr. Hyun Sung Park, CEO of HMGICS. “By integrating real-world applications into education, we aim to equip students and professionals with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving mobility landscape.”

By working together, HMGICS and SIT hope to create the next generation of talented individuals to spearhead Singapore’s transition to sustainable mobility while nurturing the next generation of industry leaders.
